Law students, legal professionals learn about European Court of Human Rights’ case law with OSCE support

More than 100 law students and legal professionals learned about the recent and topical case-law of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) at an international event held in Lviv in western Ukraine from 29 November to 1 December 2013, with the support of the OSCE Project Co-ordinator in Ukraine (PCU).

Judges of the EctHR, national courts, and prominent legal experts discussed certain aspects of the case-law of the Court with the audience, as well as ways to use the provisions of the European Convention on Human Rights in national legal proceedings. Participants also had a chance to deepen their knowledge on such topics as the right to privacy, protection of property, prohibition of discrimination, the right to a fair trial and the principle of proportionality.

The OSCE Project Co-ordinator in Ukraine, Ambassador Madina Jarbussynova, expressed her hope that “support of such dialogues will strengthen the human rights situation in Ukraine”. “As part of its activities in the human rights field, the OSCE Project Co-ordinator has focused its support on strengthening education on human rights since it has a significant impact on the people and the economic environment of the country,” she said.

The forum was organized in partnership with the Law Faculty of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv as part of a PCU project aimed at improving legal and human rights education in Ukraine.
