OSCE Office in Yerevan helps organize conference on new threats and challenges to international security

YEREVAN, 25 November, 2004 - Scientists from Armenia, Europe and the United States met in Yerevan on 24 and 25 November to discuss the threats and challenges facing the world as a result of scientific and technological advancement.

The conference, entitled New Threats and Global Challenges to International Security in the XXI Century was organized by the National Academy of Sciences with the help of the OSCE Office in Yerevan.

Some 30 participants discussed humanity's difficulty in adequately reacting to scientific and technological advancement.

"Rapid development of science and technology in the last century has radically improved our lives," said Ambassador Vladimir Pryakhin, Head of the OSCE Office. "However, these changes have also created new dangers that need to be thoroughly addressed"

Participants pledged their support for the OSCE's Strategy to Address Threats to Security and Stability in the Twenty-First Century adopted at the Organization's annual Ministerial meeting last year in Maastricht.
