The war, as well as the general state of uncertainty and danger in Ukraine, creates new and intensifies existing threats to human rights and the rule of law. In such conditions, it is essential to strengthen the human rights protection capabilities of the legal system, in particular through awareness of international standards and best practices in this area. To this end, the OSCE Secretariat Extra-Budgetary Support Programme for Ukraine with the UCU Law School opens call for application for trainees to participate in the Summer School "The Real Court: The Role of the Judiciary in the Protection of Human Rights in Times of War and Danger".
The design of the educational sessions will focus on a critical analysis of the practices of judicial protection of human rights with an emphasis on the Ukrainian context (for example, additional restrictions and protection of human rights in times of war, human rights in the digital age, the legal system in the contexts of decolonization and European integration). The School will combine theoretical sessions covering legal theory and philosophy with more practical sessions focusing on constitutional law, procedural law, and international human rights law.
Leading Ukrainian and foreign experts will be invited to participate in the event as teachers, including judges of higher courts, law professors, and workers of international human rights organizations.
To participate in the competitive selection of participants, you have to fill out an application form (Google Form), which can be filled out by well-prepared and motivated students of law faculties and universities who, at the time of the School, have already completed their 3rd year of study, graduate students, as well as representatives with minimal experience (up to three years) work in organizations promoting the rule of law and human rights in Ukraine.
The deadline for submitting applications for participation is July 31, 2023, until 11:59 p.m. Kyiv time.
Please note that the selection of Summer School students will ensure geographic and gender diversity and guarantee, as far as possible, the participation of students representing institutions of higher legal education located in temporarily occupied territories or in the regions most affected by hostilities. All travel, accommodation, and food expenses of the selected participants of the Summer School will be covered by the organizers.
