Recommendations on Ethical Standards for Investigative Journalists
A set of recommendations, prepared with the assistance of the OSCE Support Programme for Ukraine and presented at the Ukrainian Conference of Investigative Journalists - 2025 from 11 to 13 September in Kyiv, is a helpful guide for media professionals in difficult and ambiguous situations. Balancing the public interest with respect for private life, the specifics of using covert methods of information gathering and the need to protect sources, peculiarities of covering criminal trials, sensitive data in wartime - for everyone involved in investigative journalism, each of these topics has many nuances and pitfalls. The document was compiled on the basis of an analysis of codes and guidelines of foreign and Ukrainian editorial offices, with the use of outcomes of recent discussions and meetings organized for exchange of experience between Ukrainian journalists, as well as taking into account discussions of specific cases within the framework of the work of the Commission on Journalistic Ethics and legal support, provided by the Institute for the Development of Regional Press.
