OSCE Office in Baku co-hosts course on fundamental rights and freedoms for judges and lawyers

BAKU, 25 July 2011 – The OSCE Office in Baku and the German Justice Ministry's International Legal Co-operation Foundation today launched a week-long course on fundamental rights and freedoms for 30 judges and lawyers.
“Practical knowledge about how to implement OSCE commitments and related legal obligations is essential for judges, lawyers and prosecutors, who are responsible for effectively administering justice in Azerbaijan,” said Melissa Stone, Acting Head of the OSCE Office in Baku in her opening remarks.
The Azerbaijan Lawyers Confederation and the Azerbaijani Constitutional Court are co-organizing the course.
The course, part of the Judicial Legal Council's curriculum includes presentations by prominent international and national legal experts, discussions and case studies on the Implementation of the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms.
The agenda also highlights fair trial standards, the rights of detained persons, property rights and the right to freedom of assembly.
The course forms part of work by the OSCE Office in Baku to assist justice sector officials in their efforts to strengthen the rule of law and the respect for human rights in Azerbaijan.
