The Meeting on the Protection of the Environment produced a major report, which, with the report from the Conference on Economic Co-operation in Europe (Bonn, 19 March to 11 April 1990), laid the foundations for the economic and environmental dimension.
During the meeting, which took place from 16 October to 3 November, participating States reaffirmed their will to strengthen co-operation and intensify efforts to protect and improve the environment. They also said they would encourage education in environmental protection, and promote the reproduction, circulation and exchange of information.
They recommended that:
- the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (ECE) develop an international convention, code of practice or other appropriate legal instruments on the prevention and control of the transboundary effects of industrial accidents
- international exchange of information and the co-ordination of efforts in order to achieve closer harmonization in the management of hazardous chemicals be developed
- the ECE elaborate a framework convention on the protection and use of transboundary waterways and international lakes
