OSCE Mélange Programme infographic: Ensuring people's security and environmental safety

Mélange, a highly toxic, volatile, and combustible chemical substance that was extensively used in the Warsaw Pact countries during the Cold War, is a liquid rocket fuel component for short and medium-range missiles. After the end of the Cold War a number of OSCE states inherited large quantities of mélange, which was no longer needed by their armed forces and was stored in obsolete and deteriorating storage sites, posing a huge risk to human health.
Since 2003 the OSCE has been supporting its participating States in eliminating mélange – either by neutralizing it, or by safely transferring it to specialized chemical facilities where it can be safely converted to industrial products, such as agricultural fertilizers.
