OSCE Chairman-in-Office, Romanian Foreign Minister Mircea Geoana, condemned in the strongest terms the terrorist attacks in the United States. He called on the international community to unite and put an end to terrorism.
Since the attacks, the OSCE has increased its anti-terrorist activities, including the setting up of the Secretariat's Anti-Terrorism Unit (ATU). The Bucharest Plan of Action for Combating Terrorism, adopted at the OSCE Ministerial Council in December 2001, provided the mandate for the establishment of the ATU.
The Unit has an important co-ordinating role in the international fight against terrorism. One of its main goals is to address existing gaps in the anti-terrorism capabilities of the participating States, dealing with topics such as container security and travel documents.
