OSCE Chairman talks to Kyrgyz President, offers help in ending tension

LJUBLJANA, 22 March 2005 - The OSCE Chairman-in-Office, Slovenian Foreign Minister Dimitrij Rupel, on Tuesday offered the Organization's assistance to the President of Kyrgyzstan Askar Akayev in resolving current political tensions in the country.

"I assured President Akayev that the OSCE will do everything it can to help reduce tension," the Chairman-in-Office said after a telephone conversation with the Kyrgyz head of state. "I stressed that all sides should refrain from violence and provocation and resolve their political differences peacefully."

President Akayev gave his assessment of the current situation in Kyrgyzstan and expressed his appreciation for the work of the OSCE Centre in Bishkek.

The President said he would welcome a visit by the Personal Representative of the Chairman-in-Office for the OSCE States in Central Asia, Alojz Peterle, and looked forward to Minister Rupel's own visit to Kyrgyzstan, which is due to take place in the near future.
