OSCE Chair appoints panel of eminent persons to advise on future of Organization

LJUBLJANA, 3 February 2005 - The OSCE Chairman-in-Office, Slovenian Foreign Minister Dimitrij Rupel, has appointed seven prominent personalities to advise on ways of strengthening the effectiveness of the Organization.
The panel, representing countries from throughout the OSCE region, includes several former foreign ministers, a former OSCE Chairman-in-Office and a former OSCE Secretary General.
"After consulting all participating States, I am pleased to appoint distinguished individuals who I am confident will be able to give new impetus to political dialogue within the Organization and help provide strategic vision for us in the 21st century," the OSCE Chairman-in-Office said.
Foreign ministers of the OSCE participating States agreed in Sofia in December to appoint a Panel of Eminent Persons to "review the effectiveness of the Organization, its bodies and structures and provide an assessment in view of the challenges ahead."
The Panel will make its recommendations by the end of June.
