Dutch OSCE Chairmanship to honour 10 years of High Commissioner on National Minorities

THE HAGUE, 30 January 2003 - The Office of the OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities celebrates its 10th anniversary this year.
The Special Representative of OSCE Chairman-in-Office Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, Ambassador Daan Everts, will give a speech to mark the occasion at 19.00 on Friday, 31 January, in the Van Kleffenszaal of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in The Hague. Ambassador Everts, who is head of the Dutch Chairmanship's OSCE Task Force, will speak about the challenges faced by the Office of the High Commissioner on National Minorities.
The Office was created in 1992 to identify and seek early resolution of ethnic tensions that might endanger peace, stability or friendly relations between OSCE participating States.
The current High Commissioner is Ambassador Rolf Ekeus of Sweden, who succeeded Max van der Stoel of the Netherlands in July 2001.
