LISBON 5 April 2002
LISBON, 5 April 2002 - The OSCE Chairman-in-Office (CiO), Portuguese Foreign Minister Jaime Gama, has expressed today his concern about the continuing demonstrations in the Moldovan capital, Chisinau.
"We appeal to the Government and to the Opposition for continued moderation", he said. "We call on all parties involved to show restraint, refrain from violence, and commence a constructive dialogue to solve the current situation".
The CiO said he was satisfied with the tolerant approach displayed by the Moldovan authorities to date. He stressed that respect for democratic standards was paramount, and urged compliance with the relevant provisions of the Moldovan Constitution.
