BAKU, 1 March 2001- The Chairman-in-Office of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, Mircea Geoana, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Romania, expressed his grave concern regarding the recent upsurge of violence and displacement of population near the border of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia with the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia/Kosovo Province.
The Chairman-in-Office condemned these actions, which could only complicate the fragile equilibrium in the region and thus obstruct attempts of settling the existing problems there.
"I strongly request the immediate cessation of violence and call on all parties to restrain from measures that would lead to the escalation of violence", stated Mr. Geoana.
