Foreign Minister of Yugoslavia invites OSCE delegation to Belgrade

BERN, 13 December 1996 - The Foreign Minister of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, Milan Milutinovic, sent a letter today to the Chairman-in-Office of the OSCE, Swiss Foreign Minister Flavio Cotti, inviting an OSCE delegation to visit his country.
Foreign Minister Milutinovic wrote that the request is being made "due to dissatisfaction with the election results and the protests staged by a part of the opposition. " The letter stated that the OSCE delegation should "obtain true information on all the facts so that any reserve be eliminated in our relations with the international community."
This request comes after an exchange of letters between U.S. Secretary of State Warren Christopher and President Slobodan Milosevic, and a visit to the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia by Italien Foreign Minister Lamberto Dini.
The Chairman-in-Office of the OSCE welcomes this invitation and will give serious consideration to this request. He believes this invitation could open up a possibility for dialogue. He will respond to the request soon.
The Chairman-in-Office recalls his statement of 29 November in which he called for an independent review of the election process and offered the OSCE's readiness for cooperation.
