Chairman-in-Office issues statement on events in Armenia

OSLO, 28 October 1999 - The Chairman-in-Office of the OSCE, Foreign Minister Knut Vollebæk, is shocked and saddened by the assassination of the Chairman of the Armenian Parliament, Karen Demitchian; Armenian Prime Minister, Vazgen Sarkissian; Deputy Chairman of the Parliament, Yuri Bakshian, and the Minister of Operative Issues, Leonard Petrossian. He strongly condemns this brutal terrorist act, which can have no justification.
The Chairman-in-Office expresses his condolences to the people and Government of the Republic of Armenia as well as to the bereaved families. The OSCE reconfirms its commitment to supporting the people and leaders of Armenia in their efforts to build democracy at home and peace in the region.
