ZAGREB, 21 April 2004 - The OSCE Mission to Croatia today welcomed the European Commission's positive opinion on Croatia's application for membership of the European Union.
"We are pleased that Croatia has taken a big step forward in its most important aspiration", said Ambassador Peter Semneby, Head of the OSCE Mission to Croatia. "We will continue our assistance to Croatia to help it meet its future challenges on the road to full membership."
Areas where the Mission is active in Croatia include minority rights, refugee return, and judicial, police and media reform.
"I hope Croatia's anchoring in Europe will further contribute to it finding the strength to resolve the remaining difficult issues arising from the armed conflict. The OSCE will be a reliable partner on this path", Ambassador Semneby added.
The European Commission announced its opinion in Strasbourg yesterday.
