Croatian police show professionalism in handling ethnic incidents in Knin, says OSCE Mission
ZAGREB 4 April 2003
ZAGREB, 4 April 2003 - Croatian police have shown themselves professional and effective in their handling of recent isolated ethnic incidents in the Knin area which in turn should allay any fears in the community, said the Police Adviser of the OSCE's Field Centre Knin, Derek Deakin, on Friday.
"Recent incidents in the Knin area have been treated seriously by the police in an impartial and unbiased manner," he said. "The police have shown a strong commitment to stamping out any ethnic related incidents and hate crime."
"The OSCE Mission to Croatia has an excellent co-operation with police in the area and we are happy with their handling of sensitive issues," Mr Deakin added.
He also stressed that the recent incidents do not reflect the general security situation in the Knin region.
"The recent Orlic incident in no way reflects the very stable security situation in Knin," he said. "This is an isolated case which the police have dealt with in a quick and efficient manner."
He pointed out that through their work, the police are building confidence in the community, particularly in areas where tensions may be high due to unresolved property issues.
