ZAGREB, 24 May 2001 (OSCE) - The OSCE Mission to Croatia refutes the statement of the Croatian Christian Democratic Union (HKDU) on alleged bias during the monitoring of the local elections in Udbina.
Croatian state television (HRT) had reported in the central evening news ("Dnevnik") on 22 May about a press conference in which the President of the HKDU, Mr Anto Kovacevic, was accusing the OSCE of political manipulations in favour of the Serb Peoples' Party during the local elections in Udbina. Mr Kovacevic stated the OSCE had been "inviting Serbs in the field to vote for the Serb Peoples' Party".
The OSCE Mission to Croatia would like to inform the HRT and its viewers that these allegations are entirely unfounded. Such practice would be contrary to every basic principle of the OSCE and its mandate in Croatia. It is regrettable that this allegation was made without any evidence. The OSCE Mission is open to questions related to its work and mandate in order to avoid any possible misunderstandings in the future.
