OSCE Office in Yerevan supports workshop on information resources

YEREVAN, 18 May 2004 - Raising awareness of information resources available on the internet relating to science, education and environmental issues is the aim of a workshop taking place in Yerevan on 18 and 19 May.

The event will be attended by some 50 participants from research institutions, universities and libraries of Armenia and Georgia.

"Access to information and knowledge as an effective way to sustainable development is one of the priorities of our Office," said Jeannette Kloetzer, Economic/Environmental Officer at the OSCE Office in Yerevan. "The creation of the National Aarhus Centre is a good example for improving access especially to environmental information."

"Another important joint OSCE/UN initiative is the Environment and Security (ENVSEC) program for South Caucasus, which aims to transform risks into co-operation and to assess environment and security challenges in a participatory way, involving governments, academia and civil society," she said.

The workshop is organized by the OSCE Office in Yerevan together with the British Council Armenian Office, United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and UN Education and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the non-governmental organization BIOECOMED.

At the Ministerial Council in Maastricht in December 2004, OSCE participating States committed themselves to the achievement of sustainable development, aiming at economic growth and poverty reduction, taking into account the impact of human activities on the environment.
