OSCE Secretary General Zannier encourages continued commitment to democratic reforms as he concludes his visit to Skopje

SKOPJE, 1 December 2015 - OSCE Secretary General Lamberto Zannier encouraged political leaders to continue commitment to the ongoing political process and timely implementation of the Przino Agreement in full and good faith, as he concludes discussions today in Skopje.
Zannier acknowledged the country’s progress achieved towards a resolution of the political crisis, adding that efforts are at an important juncture. “Further important steps need to be taken towards strengthening democratic processes and restoring confidence in the country's institutions.”
He emphasized the importance of the upcoming April 2016 parliamentary elections. “All the sides must undertake necessary efforts to meet established timelines for the early parliamentary elections.” Zannier stressed the significance of civil society in building and strengthening democracy. “Civil society should be encouraged to play a role in the process to promote and restore people’s trust, and thus strengthen the stability which is a prerequisite for the country’s growth.”
Zannier also stressed that, while much attention is focused on the ongoing implementation of the Przino Agreement, the Ohrid Framework Agreement (OFA) remains another crucial factor for stability in the country and the region.
He also underscored that the OSCE, having its presence on the ground, offers its continued expertise and support for the implementation of the agreements, as well as elections and the work of the Special Prosecutor.
Head of the OSCE Mission to Skopje Nina Suomalainen said: “Our Mission is here to provide encouragement and support to the government and the authorities in preserving the momentum of reform implementation and maintain a dialogue with all key stakeholders.”
During the visit Zannier met President Gjorge Ivanov, Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski, and leaders of political parties, namely DUI President Ali Ahmeti, SDSM President Zoran Zaev and DPA President Menduh Thaci, as well as EU Mediator Peter Vanhoutte and representatives of civil society organizations and the international community.
