The participating States approved mandates for both the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media and the Co-ordinator of OSCE Economic and Environmental Activities.
The Representative's mandate calls for "rapid response to serious non-compliance with OSCE principles and commitments by the participating States in respect of freedom of expression and free media." The Representative would observe relevant developments in all OSCE States and address serious problems related to media freedom, performing an early-warning function.
Freimut Duve was appointed Representative on Freedom of the Media at the Copenhagen Ministerial Council (18-19 December).
The Co-ordinator's mandate calls for the strengthening of co-operation with international organizations and the economic and environmental work of OSCE field operations. Former U.S. diplomat Tom Price was appointed to the position in January 1998.
