Parliamentary Assembly President to lead election observers in Croatia

COPENHAGEN, 20 December 1999 - Mrs. Helle Degn MP (Denmark), President of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, will arrive in Zagreb on 2 January 2000 to lead the OSCE observers for the Parliamentary Elections in Croatia on 3 January 2000. President Degn was appointed by the OSCE Chairman-in-Office, Norwegian Foreign Minister Knut Vollebæk, as his Special Representative to lead more than 200 international observers deployed by the OSCE throughout the country and to deliver the preliminary assessment in conjunction with other appropriate officials on behalf of the international community on 4 January 2000.
The OSCE parliamentary observer team includes 30 representatives of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly from the following OSCE countries: Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Macedonia (fYR), the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, the Slovak Republic, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States.
The OSCE Election Observation Mission is a joint effort between the Parliamentary Assembly of the OSCE and the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) and includes long-and short-term observers from OSCE participating States. The OSCE Observation Mission will assess the conduct of the elections, the political campaign and the role of the media. Long-term observers have already been deployed for several weeks across the country.
