On Friday, June 17, 2011, the OSCE, the European Union and the Ministry for Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia jointly launched the Nikosi water project, which envisages the installation of pipes and a pump in order to supply the Nikosi and Saltvisi areas, close to Administrative Boundary Line, with irrigation water.
This project, which is co-financed by the European Union and the Government of Georgia, is being implemented by the OSCE and Municipality Development Fund of Georgia.
Ambassador Giedrius Čekuolis, who was representing the OSCE at the opening ceremony, stressed that "Improving the daily life of people close to the Administrative Boundary Line is a priority for the Lithuanian OSCE Chairmanship. Our efforts are not only in the field of water supply; they also focus on improving the overall security and humanitarian situation on the ground".
The Nikosi water project is part of a package of water projects on both sides of the Administrative Boundary Line. This package was agreed upon within the Geneva International Discussions. The OSCE is supporting the people affected by the conflict through providing them with the durable solutions which are essential for getting back to normal life.
