Combating gender-based violence

The fight against violence against women and girls is essential to the OSCE’s mandate on comprehensive security

Commitment

Recognizing that violence against women and girls is a human rights violation that not only harms the security and safety of its victims but also hinders women and girls from being full and equal participants in society, the OSCE participating States have adopted several ministerial-level decisions dealing with gender-based violence. The Organization is committed to preventing and combating this crime and many of its bodies and institutions are implementing activities that deal with it.

 

16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence

The OSCE participates every year in the global 16 Days of Activism campaign to encourage its participating States to step up efforts to combat the after-effects of sexual violence and to prevent it from happening in the first place.

Implementation

The Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights have engaged in many initiatives in this area, including, for example, on Preventing and Addressing Sexual and Gender-Based Violence in Places of Deprivation of Liberty, Integrating the Issue of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence in Detention Monitoring and Sexual and Gender-Based Violence in Armed Conflict.

In the Secretariat, the team working under the Programme for Gender Issues collects and analyses data on the prevalence, forms and consequences of violence against women and girls to provide a solid basis for informed decision-making and advocacy. Many OSCE field operations also run their own initiatives and projects on combating violence against women.
