Personal Representative Franz Vranitzky makes farewell visit to Albania

Since early March of the same year, Vranitzky's personal intervention won himself and the OSCE high praise for bringing about a peaceful resolution of the crisis in Albania. During his visit, the Presence opened its first two field offices in Shkodra in the north and Gjirokaster in the south.
Earlier in the year, Albania's economy and stability had suffered greatly from the collapse of pyramid schemes, robbing many citizens of their life savings. Albania's future prospects, however, were brighter as a result of a Donors' Meeting in Brussels on 22 October, which supported investment and technical assistance requests by the government.
A Ministerial Conference Meeting on Albania took place in Rome on 17 October, where participants welcomed the OSCE's intention to continue helping the Albanian Government by serving as a flexible co-ordinating framework for international assistance.
