Getting back to normal life in the war-affected communities is often a dangerous endeavor. Remnants of a car in Lypivka near Makariv remind of a tragedy that happened when an electricity repair team encountered an anti-vehicle mine.

Rocket tail in the field of Lypivka reminds that fields in the area may be contaminated with unexploded ordnance and, therefore, they need to be cleared before it is safe to grow crops.

Demining of affected areas need a lot of co-ordination among the variety of agencies, both local and international. Agricultural lands of Lypivka village, near Makariv, are being cleared by international NGO Halo Trust. The Ministry of Defense controls the quality of work and its compliance with the technical requirements and national mine action standards (NMAS). The OSCE in co-operation with other international organizations, national and international operators has helped Ukraine to elaborate and adopt NMAS based on the best international practices and experiences of demining operators in Ukraine.

On Wednesday, 15 June 2022, Ambassador Henrik Villadsen, the OSCE Project Co-ordinator, visited towns and villages that were the epicenter of heavy fighting in February-April in the attempted attack of Russian troops on Kyiv.

The aim of the visit was to get aware of the scope of international assistance needed in the area, including in Makariv, Borodianka, Irpin and Bucha. Even though the focus of the trip was  humanitarian demining, the OSCE is also assisting Ukraine in many other spheres, including  assessment of the environmental damage, addressing chemical security threats, enhancing system of psychosocial rehabilitation of affected popolation and others.
