Unintentional releases of toxic substances, accidents at enterprises and during the transportation of chemicals, are a systematic challenge in such a highly industrialized country as Ukraine. Capacity to respond effectively to chemical incidents is critical for security of both people and the environment. Proper training of personnel who are the first to arrive on the scene of the chemical accident is key in addressing the threat and saving lives.

To strengthen the capacity of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (the SESU) to train first-responders dealing with chemical emergencies the OSCE Project Co-ordinator in Ukraine designed recommendations on developing a comprehensive training programme on CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear) emergency response, provided equipment for practical exercises, organized a series of intensive theoretical and practical trainings for the SESU staff of specialised CBRN units.

Media representatives are invited to attend and cover a concluding day of the training to be delivered to the chief officers of CBRN units from all regions of Ukraine on 13th October 2021, at the premises of the National University of Civil Defence of Ukraine (Bavarskaya str., 7). This opportunity, taking place from 10:00 to 12:30, will include an introductory briefing for journalists on chemical security, its challenges and risks, a practical exercise outdoors and a ceremony of awarding of the certificates to training participants. The practical exercise will involve mastering of the actions of fire-rescue units while responding to an incident with hazardous chemical substance, including evacuation of victims, blocking of the substance leakage, decontamination of personnel and those who suffered.

Representatives of the OSCE Project Co-ordinator, Project donors, representatives of the SESU central apparatus and training institutions, experts will attend the event.
