OSCE Project Co-ordinator in Ukraine supports development of manual on gender-sensitive and non-discriminatory media reporting

A draft manual supported by the OSCE Project Co-ordinator on how media professionals can take a gender-sensitive and non-discriminatory approach in their reporting is now open to suggestions and feedback from journalists, civil society and academia, before it is published later this year.

The manual, which is designed for media professionals and educators, highlights the main concepts related to gender-sensitive media coverage, and provides case studies to illustrate good practices and challenges. The main Ukrainian and international legal instruments related to gender equality and non-discrimination are featured in the manual for reference. The publication also offers a detailed plan of a short training course for media professionals as well as recommendations on how to teach on the subject.

Representatives of the media, civil society and academia wishing to review the text can download it here. They are invited to submit their feedback to tetiana.medun@osce.org by 30 November 2014. 

The manual builds on training seminars which were piloted over the course of July and October in Kyiv, Lviv and Odesa, and brought together almost 100 journalists, media educators and advertising professionals from various regions of Ukraine.

Based on the feedback, the manual is designed to be used in relevant higher education institutions, and will be updated and printed by the end of the year.

These activities are part of a project implemented by the OSCE Project Co-ordinator at the request of the Ukraine’s Ministry of Social Policy to support the advancement of gender equality in the country.
