About

The 2017 Aarhus Centres Annual Meeting, organised by the Office of Co-ordinator of OSCE Economic and Environmental Activities in co-operation with UNECE will gather representatives of the Aarhus Centres as well as Aarhus Convention National Focal Points from 14 countries to present highlights, experiences and lessons learnt from their work as well as discuss their future priorities in light of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and other post-2015 global and regional frameworks

In the meeting, Aarhus Centres representatives will present their activities in fostering good environmental governance in various fields.  How public participation in environmental legislation processes can be enhanced, how communities can actively participate in disaster risk reduction planning, how innovative ideas drive eco-journalism, how public awareness raising can contribute to the management of hazardous waste are some of the examples that the Aarhus Centres will demonstrate.

The meeting will take place in the form of a side event within the framework of the Sixth Meeting of the Parties to the Aarhus Convention and the third session of the Meeting of the Parties to the Protocol on Pollutant Release and Transfer Registers (PRTRs).

The Aarhus Centres serve local stakeholders in 14 countries in South-Eastern Europe, Eastern Europe, the South Caucasus and Central Asia. This OSCE-supported network aims to achieve higher standards of environmental democracy through raising awareness, fostering transparency and accountability in environmental decision-making and facilitating joint action for addressing priority environmental challenges within and across borders.
