The OCEEA, together with the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), has started implementing a project on the development of a Handbook of Best Practices at Border Crossings.
The Regional Stakeholders' Meeting was an important preparatory step and follows a similar event held in Minsk, Belarus, on 8 and 9 October 2008. The meeting in Bishkek brought together the project's management board members as well as border guard and customs representatives from across the region.
The event's main objectives were:
- generating a better view of the level of inter-agency co-operation efforts along Central Asian and South Caucasus borders, both domestically as well as bilaterally;
- identifying the strengths and weaknesses of current border policies;
- discussing future initiatives and planned policy reforms; and
- compiling a list of best practices that can be described and explained in the Handbook.
The meeting was preceded by an assessment visit to the Ak-Jol/Korday border crossing point between Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan.
