The United Nations granted the CSCE observer status at its General Assembly following the agreement of a framework for co-operation and co-ordination signed in May of the same year.
The UN is one of the OSCE's closest partners. Co-operation was initiated in 1992, when the participating States declared the OSCE (at that time CSCE) to be "a regional arrangement in the sense of Chapter VIII of the Charter of the United Nations".
The UN General Assembly has granted observer status to a number of regional organizations, including the Organization of American States in 1948, the League of Arab States in 1950, the Organization of African Unity in 1965 and the European Economic Community in 1974.
