About

The meeting focussed on two areas: specific aspects of co-operation and the protection of Mediterranean ecosystems. The first included topics such as:

  • promoting faster social and economic development
  • harmonizing statistical methods 
  • concrete programmes for co-operation 
  • solar and wind energy 
  • preservation and protection of cultural heritage and historical centres

The second area included topics such as:

  • urban, agricultural and industrial water uses and requirements 
  • pollution of surface and underground water and of the Mediterranean Sea 
  • pollution by national and trans-boundary waterways flowing into the Mediterranean and pollution by ships 
  • water resources 
  • desertification 
  • forest fires 
  • air pollution 
  • management of coastal areas 
  • tourism

Today's OSCE Mediterranean Partners for Co-operation are Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Morocco and Tunisia.

Contacts with the Mediterranean Partners for Co-operation were developed over time, beginning with a section on 'Questions relating to security and co-operation in the Mediterranean' included in the Helsinki Final Act. The OSCE holds regular meetings and seminars dedicated to Mediterranean security issues.
