OSCE Chairperson condemns assassination of former Afghan President Rabbani

NEW YORK, 20 September 2011 – The OSCE Chairperson-in-Office, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Audronius Ažubalis, today condemned the suicide bomb attack in Kabul that killed Afghanistan’s former President and Head of the High Peace Council Burhanuddin Rabbani, and extended his condolences to the families of all those killed, and to the Afghan people.
“Rabbani was a driving force in Afghanistan’s efforts to achieve peace. His death is a great loss, but his mediation efforts must go on. Addressing security challenges in Afghanistan and the whole region requires co-ordination of international efforts. The OSCE will continue its engagement with Afghanistan to promote a stable, independent, prosperous and democratic country,” Ažubalis said.
Afghanistan became an OSCE Partner for Co-operation in 2003.
