OSCE seminar in Trieste to analyze economic and security implications of demographic trends

VIENNA, 5 November 2004 - Demographic change and its effect on security and stability in the OSCE region, and the link between demographic developments and environmental issues will be discussed at an OSCE seminar in Trieste, Italy on 8 and 9 November.
Representatives of NGOs and academics from the 55 OSCE participating States will also discuss the long-term prospects for demographic change in the OSCE and neighbouring regions, the impact of ageing, fertility, family dynamics and policy responses, health hazards and communicable diseases.
The seminar, entitled "Demographic Prospects in the OSCE area: Economic and Security Implications," is part of preparations for the 13th OSCE Economic Forum to be held in Prague next year.
It will be opened by Italian Foreign Minister, Roberto Antonione, and Andrej Logar, State Secretary, Foreign Ministry of Slovenia.
The seminar is organised by the incoming OSCE Slovenian Chairmanship and the Office of the Co-ordinator for Economic and Environmental Activities, with the support of the Italian foreign ministry, the Italian Friuli Venezia Giulia region, the Municipality of Trieste and the University of Trieste.
Media representatives are invited to attend the opening session of the event:
at 9.00 on 8 November at the University of Trieste (Università degli Studi di Trieste), Aula Magna (3rd floor), Piazzale Europa 1.
