Broad range of security and humanitarian concerns raised at 30th round of Geneva International Discussions

GENEVA, Switzerland, 10 December 2014 - The thirtieth session of the Geneva International Discussions has just concluded its work.

In Working Group I, the participants have assessed the general security situation on the ground as relatively calm with no major security incidents occurring since the previous round in October. The participants once again exchanged views on non-use of force, international security arrangements, as well as freedom of movement and travel abroad. They also continued working on a draft joint statement related to non-use of force. As part of the review of the security situation, a discussion took place on the agreement on "alliance and strategic partnership" signed between Moscow and Sukhumi on 24 November 2014. Divergent views were expressed in this regard.

The participants also reviewed and welcomed the good co-operation within the Ergneti Incident Prevention and Response Mechanism (IPRM) and urged the early resumption of the Gali IPRM.

In Working Group II, the participants addressed humanitarian issues by reviewing the developments that occurred on the ground since the previous round. Among others, they discussed issues related to freedom of movement, missing persons, conservation and restoration of cultural heritage, education and water projects. The issue of IDPs and refugees was also raised.

All participants reiterated their strong commitment to the Geneva International Discussions, which they see as the appropriate forum to bring up issues that they deem relevant to the security and humanitarian situation. For instance, any new developments which could have implications for the security and stability on the ground, real or perceived, may be discussed in this forum.

The participants agreed to hold their next session on 17-18 March 2015.
