Press communiqué of the Co-Chairs of the Geneva International Discussions

The 66^th round of the Geneva International Discussions (GID) took place on 18-19 March 2026 in the United Nations Palais des Nations in accordance with the six-point agreement of 12 August 2008 and implementing measures of 8 September 2008. Despite persisting divergences, the discussions were substantive and open.

The participants underlined that the continued functioning of the GID – as a unique platform for important exchanges on conflict-related matters – evidences their commitment to a peaceful settlement of all pending issues. They equally stressed the GID’s important role in contributing to stability and security. The Co-Chairs appealed to advance on all core agenda items and keep focus on conflict-affected populations. 

In Working Group I, the participants reviewed the security situation on the ground since the 65^th round held in November 2025. They continued their exchanges, with a particular focus on the agenda item “Non-Use of Force and International Security Arrangements”.

In Working Group II, the participants discussed humanitarian issues, including crossings, documentation, livelihoods, missing persons, education and health. They also continued their exchanges on freedom of movement and external mobility. The agenda item “returns” of internally displaced persons and refugees could again not be discussed during this round, due to a walkout by some participants. In this context, the Co-Chairs reiterate their call on participants to address all agenda items without preconditions.

The participants agreed to hold the next round in June 2026 in Geneva.
