OSCE trains law students in Nakhchivan

NAKHCHIVAN, Azerbaijan, 8 June 2011 – A three-day OSCE-supported court presentation skills course for law students at the Nakhchivan State University (NSU) started in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan (NAR) today. International and local experts will provide theoretical and practical training on international trial standards, and will facilitate interactive simulations of criminal court proceedings focusing on the differing roles of judges, prosecutors and defence lawyers.
The course is organized by the Office in Baku in co-operation with the NAR authorities, NSU, Bar Association and Ministry of Justice.
“This course is designed to increase the knowledge of law students from the NSU about the practices of criminal courts in accordance with international fair trial standards and the European Convention on Human Rights. We anticipate that this exercise will prove useful for them in their future careers as members of the judiciary, prosecutors or defence lawyers,” said Monica Martinez, head of Rule of Law and Human Rights at the OSCE Office in Baku.
The course is part of the OSCE Office in Baku’s assistance to Azerbaijan in implementing the state programme on the development of the justice system for 2009-2013. One of the requirements of the programme is the enhancement of staff training and the level of professionalism in the justice system.
The OSCE Office in Baku remains committed to assisting the NAR’s authorities in their endeavours to improve compliance with fair trial standards in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.
