Opening of Juvenile Diversion Centre and Juvenile Legal Clinic

A memorandum of understanding to enhance juvenile justice reform in Azerbaijan was signed on 14 August 2007 by UNICEF, the OSCE Office in Baku, the Ministry of Interior and the NGO Alliance for Child's Rights Protection.
The following activities have been carried out within the framework of the project:
- A diversion centre has been established, as a pre-trial option to ensure that children are dealt with outside the formal criminal justice system, according to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child;
- A juvenile legal clinic has been set up, helping to address the needs of juveniles in conflict with the law for professional legal aid services; and
- Development of the juvenile justice and Convention on the Rights of the Child curriculum for the Police Academy.
