BAKU, 19 September 2002 - A delegation of the OSCE Strategic Police Matters Unit (SPMU) will visit Baku from 21 to 27 September, to evaluate the possibilities for technical assistance in order to strengthen OSCE's police-related activities.
The delegation will be headed by OSCE's Senior Police Advisor, Richard Monk, and will include OSCE Police Advisor, Hans Jarvestam.
As a part of the "first preliminary police assessment missions", the visiting experts' evaluation will in turn improve the protection of participating States against the emerging new risks and challenges, posed by transnational and organized crime, drug and other forms of trafficking, failure to uphold the rule of law, and human rights violation.
During their stay in Azerbaijan, the delegation will meet officials of government, representatives of the embassies, international organizations and of various police-related institutions.
The SPMU is currently working with participating States in different areas including multi-ethnic, community and border policing, organized and major crime, police education and development, forensics.
Representatives media outlets are invited to a press briefing on 26 September at 5:00 p.m. in the OSCE Office in Baku.
