OSCE Office holds meeting on sustainable development in Armenia

YEREVAN, 29 October 2004 - More than forty-five Armenian parliamentarians and government representatives attended a meeting on sustainable development held in the country's National Assembly.

The event was organized by the OSCE Office in Yerevan together with the National Assembly, UNDP and the NGO "Association for Sustainable Human Development".

"The OSCE Office is involved in public awareness and environmental education, as well as in facilitating the participation of civil society in national, regional and international policy discussions," said Ambassador Vladimir Pryakhin, Head of the Office.

The Speaker of the National Assembly, Arthur Baghdasaryan, stressed the importance of Armenia's involvement in the processes of sustainable development and the role legislators have to play in it.

Other topics on the agenda included legislation, security and education matters related to sustainable development, the Aarhus process and ecological rights, and the Rio+10 process in Armenia.
