OSCE Office launches website on competition policy in Armenia

YEREVAN, 25 April 2003 - The official website of the State Commission on Protection of Economic Competition of Armenia has been launched with the support of the OSCE Office in Yerevan.
The website (www.competitionpolicy.am) provides a full range of information on economic competition policy reform in Armenia and aims to strengthen the transparency of the work, structure and policy of the Armenian Competition Authority. The site was technically developed by a young Armenian professional company, Web-Studio.
"Creation of this website will contribute to transparency and efficiency of the work of the Commission," said Ambassador Roy Reeve, Head of the OSCE Office in Yerevan at the launching ceremony. He also stressed the importance of the website in order to raise public awareness of their activities.
The bilingual website in English and Armenian introduces existing legislation on competition and provides extensive information on the main functions of the competition authority, its mission, structure, objectives and composition. The site also contains a database of cases of competition violation registered by the Commission and a special "complaints" form that can be filled out and sent to the Commission by companies or individuals in order to lodge a case.
"The website will serve as a useful tool for informing the public about our activities and enhancing our co-operation with local and international organizations on competition issues," said the Head of the Commission, Samvel Stepanian.
Representatives of local NGOs, professional associations of consumer rights, and other Government agencies present at the event also welcomed this joint initiative of the OSCE and the State Commission.
The creation of the website was suggested as a recommendation at the conference held by the OSCE Office in Yerevan in September 2002 on Good Governance in Economic Policy Development in Armenia: Promoting Economic Competition, in co-operation with the Armenian-European Policy and Legal Advice Centre (AEPLAC) and United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The main objective was to support ongoing economic reforms aimed at economic efficiency, growth and stability for the benefit of businesses and consumers.
