First anniversary of Ohrid Agreement reflects year of progress in former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia

VIENNA, 13 August, 2002 - The OSCE Chairmanship notes the first anniversary of the signing of the Ohrid Framework Agreement, which put an end to the conflict in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. Its subsequent implementation has stabilized the framework for a peaceful resolution of outstanding issues.

The successful redeployment of the police force, facilitated by the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, represented one important step for the future peaceful development of the country. Currently, the training of police recruits helps enhance the multi-ethnic character of state institutions.

In close co-operation with these state institutions, the OSCE continues to be active in creating an atmosphere of confidence which enables citizens to exercise freedom of movement, and provides the conditions for displaced persons or refugees to return to their homes.

Reforms in the spirit of the Framework Agreement will be assisted by the OSCE, allowing the country to move forward along the path of integration into European and Euro-Atlantic structures.
