KYIV, 5 May 2001 (OSCE) - On 5 and 6 May, judges from regional courts throughout Ukraine participated in an international workshop on environmental law, organized by the OSCE Project Co-ordinator in co-operation with the Supreme Court of Ukraine and the NGO "Ecopravo".
The workshop gathered representatives of Oblast (Regional) Courts throughout Ukraine, to hear about judicial resolutions of disputes related to environmental issues.
Representatives of the Supreme Court and a number of Ukrainian lawyers provided participants with an overview of the current situation and prospects of judicial protection of citizens' right for a safe environment in Ukraine. An expert in environmental rights from the Karl-Franzens University of Graz (Austria) discussed ecological law issues in Austria and other European countries.
On the second day of the workshop, all participants gathered at a round table meeting to address various environmental law issues. The workshop's success underlined the necessity of holding similar meetings in the future.
