OSCE Chairman-in-Office appeals for funds for upcoming elections in Bosnia and Herzegovina

COPENHAGEN, 22 April 1997 - The Chairman-in-Office of the OSCE, Danish Foreign Minister Niels Helveg Petersen, issued the following statement today concerning the fundraising for the local elections in Bosnia:
The forthcoming local elections in Bosnia in September this year represent one of the biggest challenges facing the OSCE in 1997. These elections are extremely complex and demanding in terms of personnel and financing. The local elections will be of key importance for the future developments in Bosnia. High quality of the elections is necessary for the carrying through of this key aspect of the peace process in 1997.
The outstanding budgetary demands for the financing of the elections amounts to some 30 million U.S. dollars. I have appointed former Foreign Minister of Italy, Ms. Susanna Agnelli, as my Personal Representative for the task of raising the necessary funds. Ms. Agnelli is planning a series of contacts on the highest level in capitals of donor countries.
The need for funds is urgent and firm pledges for contributions are needed as soon as possible. In order to avoid delays pledges for the outstanding amount should be secured by the end of May.
Denmark for its part is prepared to provide a contribution of around one million U.S. dollars.
