Chairman-in-Office issues statememt on observation of elections in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia

COPENHAGEN, 18 August 1997 - The Chairman-in-Office of the OSCE, Danish Foreign Minister Niels Helveg Petersen, issued the following statement in Copenhagen today on the OSCE observation of the upcoming elections in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY):
The Chairman-in-Office of the OSCE has today reacted positively to an invitation from the Foreign Minister of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, Milan Milutinovic, to the OSCE to observe the elections for the President of the Republic of Serbia and for the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia on 21 September 1997.
Foreign Minister Niels Helveg Petersen expresses his satisfaction at this development and his hope that this may give new impetus to the process that began with the Gonzalez Report of December 1996.
The OSCE's Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights will immediately initiate preparations for observation.
In a letter to Minister Milutinovic, the Chairman-in-Office made clear that the OSCE observation should take place in accordance with established OSCE procedures including the granting of full access to all parties and participants. He expressed his expectation that the Government of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia will render the OSCE observation all the support needed.
