Rehabilitation of areas affected by Chernobyl

In October 2003, the OSCE Office in Minsk signed the Declaration of Principles of the international CORE Programme (Co-operation for Rehabilitation of living conditions in Chernobyl-affected areas in Belarus).

The primary goal of the CORE Programme has been to improve living conditions for the population in four regions of Belarus affected by Chernobyl: Bragin, Cherchersk, Slavgorod and Stolin. This goal was achieved through the development and implementation of integrated projects in the following priority areas: healthcare, education, socio-economic development, radiological quality and agro-economics. This involved local initiatives by the population of these regions.

The CORE programme ended after five years in December 2008.

The Office continues to support ad hoc projects in the region.

In 2009, the Office is supporting one major project on pig raising and introducing modern technologies in Slavgorod district and two projects on greenhouse technologies and diversification of products in the Stolin district.

In addition, the Office is implementing a project with funding from Belgium on the promotion of youth entrepreneurship in rural Slavgorod district.
