High-Level Discussion on “Promoting the Role of Women in Addressing Environment and Security Challenges”

The half-day high-level discussion will bring together leading practitioners at the national and international levels to discuss the impact of environmental challenges on women and how to integrate a gender perspective in environmental planning and decision-making. The event aims to raise awareness among participating States for the links between environment and security through an integrated gender perspective, while providing examples of good practices from the OSCE region and beyond.

The increasing frequency and intensity of natural disasters and extreme weather events, the growing demand for and competition over access to natural resources, and environmental degradation pose challenges to sustainable development, economic progress, security and stability. In addressing these challenges, the different and specific capacities and vulnerabilities of women and men need to be taken into account.

The opening session will be addressed by State Secretary, Ministry of Environment of the Slovak Republic Norbert Kurilla and by OSCE Secretary-General Thomas Greminger.

How to promote the role of women in addressing environmental and security challenges will be the focus of the conversation with Mary Robinson, Former President of Ireland, former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, former UN Special Envoy on Climate Change, and founder of the Mary Robinson Foundation – Climate Justice.
