OSCE autumn school on criminal process aims at enhancing education in Ukraine’s law schools

An autumn school in Lviv was organized by the OSCE Project Co-ordinator in Ukraine (PCU) from 30 September to 2 October 2015 for law professors from 16 universities across Ukraine with the aim of highlighting the current trends and methodologies on educating criminal procedure law.

National and international experts delivered presentations on the concept evidence from the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) perspective and the specifics of applying ECHR case-law within the criminal procedure of Ukraine. An OSCE-supported textbook on criminal procedure was also presented during the autumn school. Following discussions, the participants offered solutions to existing issues in the sphere of criminal procedure.

The autumn school was co-organized with the Ivan Franko Lviv National University, which hosted the event, and the Council of Europe’s project supporting the criminal justice reform in Ukraine.

This event is part of a series of autumn schools for law professors, which is organized under the PCU’s project of helping law schools to promote human rights. The project is supported by the German Government and implemented in co-operation with the Ministry of Education and Science and leading law universities.

Earlier this year PCU experts developed the draft national standard of legal education at the Bachelor level, and this was submitted to the Ministries of Education and Science, and of Justice. The document provides the minimum requirements for every law faculty and is aimed at enhancing legal education in Ukraine.
