OSCE Pilots a standardized course for Ukrainian judges on European Human Rights standards

The OSCE Project Co-ordinator in Ukraine (PCU) has piloted a standardized training course for judges on the application of the European Convention on Human Rights (Convention) and the case-law of the European Court of Human Rights (Court).

25 newly-appointed judges took the training course, which is based on methodological best practices that include group-work, interactive sessions, case-studies and mini-lectures. Group work at the course was conducted with support from professional facilitators and judges-trainers. The event was also attended by representatives of the National Judicial Institute of Canada, who provided valuable methodological comments and very positive feedback on the piloting.

The course was developed in co-operation with national partners – National School of Judges, Supreme Court and High Administrative Court within the “Safeguarding Human Rights through Courts” Project funded by the Government of Canada.

This was the first piloting of one out of two courses on the application of the Convention and case-law of the Court developed with the PCU support in 2014-2015. Three more pilots followed by four training of trainers will take place by the end of 2015.
