OSCE Project Co-ordinator supports dialogue on future reform of Ukraine’s justice system

As discussions on the need to improve effectiveness of the judiciary are gaining pace in Ukraine, the OSCE Project Co-ordinator supported a roundtable meeting on 2 June 2014 with the aim of facilitating dialogue on reforms to the justice system.

The roundtable discussion, organized by the Higher Administrative Court of Ukraine in Kyiv, brought together more than 60 judges of administrative courts from different regions of the country, prominent legal experts, members of the Advisory Council to the country’s Higher Administrative Court, legal academia and representatives of civil society and international organizations.

They highlighted possible approaches to improving the way justice functions. The role, place and prospects of administrative courts in the national judicial system as well as their status, were among the topics of focus. The outcomes of these discussions will help to define the necessity and scope of required changes to the chapter on justice in the Constitution of Ukraine.

The event is part of an OSCE PCU project aimed at enhancing the coherence of administrative court practice in Ukraine. The project is being implemented at the request of the Higher Administrative Court of Ukraine, with support from the Government of Norway.
